Comet C/2006 P1 McNaught

The first photograph of Comet McNaught taken from Bolivia, South America on the evening of Wednesday, January 17, 2007. Sporting a huge tail and bright core, the comet was photographed by Rodolfo Zalles, the Director of the National Observatory of Bolivia in Tarija. He observed and photographed the comet from the observatory while it was visible naked eye for about 13 minutes. His photograph was taken at 7:39 p.m. local time with a Nikon D100 digital camera and a 200mm lens. (Photo by Rodolfo Zalles ©2007)

Comet McNaughtt's tail grew even longer on the evening of January 10, 2007 and was an easy naked-eye object for more than 15 minutes. The comet was photographed with a Nikon D100 camera at asa 800 with a 180mm lens at f2.8 / 30th of a second. Comet McNaughtt's tail grew even longer and brighter when viewed close up with a long telephoto lens. The comet was photographed with a Nikon D100 camera at asa 800 with a 600mm lens at f4 / 15th of a second. The image was taken at 5:44 p.m. cst from a hill just west of the ICASTARS Ranch, northwest of Warrensburg, Missouri USA. just before it set into a thin layer of clouds about one degree above the western horizon. For being so low to the horizon the comet was very bright and easily located in binoculars as the sky started to darken. It was visible for about 5 minutes naked eye as it quickly dropped towards the trees on the horizon. Very bright core with a beautiful tail. Venus (upper left corner) and Comet C2006/P1 (McNaught) imaged January 10, 2007 with a Pentax *ist D, 16mm lens, f5.6, 0.3" exposure from Adrian, Missouri, USA.   Racing toward the horizon, the comet was almost as bright naked eye as it is in this image.  The comet has brightened and moved markedly toward the sun over the previous two days.(Photo (C)2007 by Neta Apple)
