December Northern Lights!

This image was taken at 7:20 p.m. CST on the evening of December 14, 2006. It was a 60 second exposure with a Nikon D-100 digital camera with a 16mm wide angle lens at f2.8. ASA was 800. Facing north, northwest from the grounds of the Douglas Observatory located at the ICSTARS Ranch, northwest of Warrensburg, Missouri, USA. The aurora even lasted no more than 15 minutes, but produced spikes of red , white and purple with a strong green curtain near the horizon. (C)2006 Vic Winter/ICSTARS Astronomy.



The Northern Lights made a brief appearance over the ICSTARS Ranch located northwest of Warrensburg, Missouri early in the evening on December 14, 2006. Starting with a few bright white spikes in the north, northeast, the northern sky quickly was turned deep green near the horizon and bright columns of red and purple rose and fell under Polaris. This photograph was taken at 7:25pm CST with a Nikon D-100 digital camera with a 16mm wide angle lens at f2.8. The asa was 800 and the exposure was 60 seconds on a tripod.
